I tried and failed to find the artist that painted this wonderful album cover. A fond farewell to its past and a clenched fist as it enters the future. From the progressive rock to glam rock to wailing guitars of yesterday, Saxon's debut is the chronological bridge of heavy metal as it entered the 1980's. Saxon's debut, however, still falls to the wayside in terms of popularity probably because it is still drunk on an older variety of heavy metal. Now listening through the band's next three albums, it is not difficult to see how the classic formula of gruff speed influenced heavy metal wouldn't become iconic. It is interesting how Saxon isn't obscure but their populairty seems to be tied more to a moment in time which around the early 80's seemed to be the size of an asteroid about to hit the earth. Since Saxon seems to be out of my range of direct knowledge, it doesn't seem hard to grasp while albums like Wheels of Steel (1980), Strong Arm of the Law (1980) and Denim and Leather (1981) make it into peoples minds and hearts as the sound and energy went onto influence a new generation of heavy metal band that would be making music in just a few years. Looking over their history, the band's 1979 debut seemed to only be a prelude to three albums that were released between 19. 1981's Denium and Leather seems to be the band's most popular record with " Princess of the Night' being their biggest hit.
Perhaps the more surprising fact I discovered when putting together this AOTW was the reletivle obscurity of Saxon's debut compared to more popular albums from the early and mid 80's.
